First State Super was established in 1992 and is one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds with over 750 000 members and $46 billion dollars’ worth of funds under management.
First State Super first came to 4mation Technologies in 2005 for a new content management system for their existing website. Since then 4mation has assisted them with a number of other solutions including email marketing, mobile website development, iPhone application development, a new microsite, and more recently, an entire front-end website redevelopment.
At the end of 2012, FSS started planning a 1 July 2013 re-brand based on the new company philosophy “First and foremost for you”. They needed a new website with a modern look to convey this fresh new outlook of their brand.
FSS had some initial design proofs from their external design company; however after reviewing these we made recommendations on icon and button design, layout styles, and the use of colours in the design. These suggestions were intended to bring the design into a more contemporary web space, streamline user experience and allow the design to scale well on mobile devices. FSS decided to put these ideas into practice and a great new design followed. 4mation also developed a responsive layout from these designs using HTML5 and CSS3, which allowed us to have a web, tablet and mobile friendly site without the need to develop a secondary site or duplicate content.
This project was extremely time-critical—the 4mation team had less than six weeks to complete the redevelopment before First State Super rolled out their new company philosophy nation-wide. However doing what they do best, 4mation finished the project on budget and bug free, with the new website successfully going live at 2am on July 1.
4mation implemented some advanced tracking code which allows FSS and 4mation to analyse the actions made by users of the site. Using Google Analytics events tracking, including the newly released Real-Time tracking feature, has already shown us how well the users are interacting with the new layout and how they are utilising the new features that we had developed.
For the new July 1 launch 4mation built some extra features onto the existing CMS. These features included:
- A news feature where FSS could enter, edit, publish and prioritise news articles that would be shown on the home page and news pages.
- A campaign manager that allowed FSS staff to create campaigns that would be page specific to keep visitors up to date with what is going on in the Super world.
- An upgrade to the WYSIWYG editor, so that it now uses one of the most powerful editors around.
