Web Design in the Smartphone Era

Since the Apple-inspired demise of the flash website, the web design community has kept abreast of the smartphone revolution and adapted their designs accordingly. Sites that once emphasised flashy, animated graphics and layouts are now being stripped back to their essence in favour of accessible, efficient and informational designs.

The smartphone era has had a positive effect on web design as a whole – gone are the days where users are made to sit through intro pages, pop-up nag screens (“Subscribe now!”) and play “find the content” when browsing the web.

One of the most important developments of the smartphone era web is the evolution of responsive design. A site that once was designed to be seen strictly on a 1024×768 display could now be viewed on a mobile phone or tablet with a multitude of variations in display dimensions. Designers/developers are now tasked with the creation of “one size fits all” layouts that maintain a balance between the attractive and the functional.

The alternative to the one-size-fits all approach is the mobile website. News sites in particular have been on the forefront of this change in readership, often offering mobile-friendly minimalist versions of traditionally ad-laden, content packed websites.
